The roots of racialized travel behavior

Transportation inequities, particularly in the United States, result part from historical and contemporary racism planning, policy, urban development, decision making, societal institutions. They have limited mobility access to opportunity for Black, Indigenous, people of color, shaped ways that they travel. This chapter reviews literature on racial ethnic identity travel behavior, examining history claims transportation injustice. The explores barriers historically marginalized communities experience as a disproportionate policing, safety security issues, neighborhood othering belonging—that is, inviting suspicion because person appears be “out place” neighborhood. It concludes by making case why planners must consider race explanatory factors race-neutral planning processes exacerbate disparities.
